Is Gambling Right For Christians?

Gambling involves putting something of value on the outcome of an event whose probabilities are uncertain. This can include playing casino games such as blackjack, roulette or poker. It can also involve lottery, bingo and sports gambling. It has many negative effects on society and individuals, but it is important to remember that gambling can also provide real value in some ways.

For some people, it is a fun way to spend time with friends or family. They might enjoy the adrenaline rush of winning and the excitement of spending their hard earned money. Others might do it for coping reasons, such as to forget their problems and help them feel better.

Some studies have looked at the costs and benefits of gambling. However, these studies tend to focus on economic impacts and ignore social impacts. These social impacts are difficult to quantify in monetary terms and may be best evaluated using health-related quality of life weights, similar to those used in disability research.

For Christians, gambling is not right because it denies the biblical work ethic that links honest labour with reward and it can encourage laziness which is condemned in Scripture (e.g. 2 Thessalonians 3:10). It can also appeal to greed “which is idolatry” according to the Apostle Paul (Colossians 3:5). It breaches the 1st, 2nd and 10th commandments which demand that we cannot serve God and Money simultaneously. It is not the answer to poverty, unemployment or other societal problems.
